Destinations throughout Central Utah provide the most diverse and unique rock hounding sites in the state. Popular finds include trilobites, gem quality topaz, red beryl, geodes and sun stones. Although rock collecting is permitted on most public lands for personal use, you need to research the area you plan to collect in. Be sure that a permit is not required and check for mining claims. The Southern Utah Rock Club brings people together who share a common passion for rocks, minerals and jewelry making from southern Utah and surrounding areas. I recently talked to a wildlife biologist here in Utah that informed me that there are contradictions in the rules and you could be given a ticket for shooting rock chucks unless you have a license for collecting them. Rockhounding. The area surrounding Green River and in Emery County boasts a large variety of fossils including plants, ammonites, and oysters. Agates are also quite abundant in certain rock units as well as a variety of interesting minerals. There are many different laws in place regarding the collection of rocks and minerals from public areas. Rockhounding is free to the public at this geode-hunting hotspot in Utah’s West Desert. Use a shovel or pickaxe to pan through the soil in search of light, 2-4” spherical rocks. They may look dull on the outside, but split them open with a hammer to reveal the sparkling white, purple or pink crystals inside.
